Athens Olympic Stadium Hang on P-scan Inspections

P-scan inspected the major supporting structures of a new and unique stadium designed for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

The roof protecting spectators against sunshine has been designed to hang in arched steel beams spanning across the entire stadium ground.

The curved beams, each 304 metres long, are designed as steel tubes with a diameter ranging from 300 centimetres to 350 centimetres and a wall thickness from 60 to 95 millimetres. The beams were constructed by connecting 3 metres long tube elements.

The Italian construction company Cimolai, expert in the field of steel constructions, pre-fabricated tube sections at their fabrication works in Italy. These were then shipped to Greece and joined together on site in Athens.

Cimolai selected P-scan 4 for the automated ultrasonic inspection of welding done in Italy.

The circumferential welds of pre-fabricated tube sections were inspected in a set-up using an automated modular scanner to move the 8 probes while the tube section is rotated.
